Mitsie B. Smith founded Smith Commercial Management, Inc. in 2007 to aid individuals, families, partnerships, and other independent commercial building owners that were underserved with professional property management in Northern California. Mitsie focuses her energies on ensuring the team delivers the highest quality, professional real estate services. The success of the firm is attributed to her daily attention to the needs of each client and tenant. The firm currently manages approximately 2 million square feet of commercial properties throughout Northern California.
Before starting Smith Commercial Management, Mitsie was Senior Vice President of Property Management for Biagini Properties for nearly 11 years where she oversaw the management of over 350 retail tenants covering more than six counties in Northern California. She was instrumental in taking the market value of a distressed property from $1.7 million to $6.5 million in less than five years.
Prior to that, Mitsie worked for both national and regional companies including South Bay Development, GEOMAX, O’Donnell Hopkins and Partners, and Insignia O’Donnell. She was responsible for the management and leasing of multi-project portfolios consisting of office, industrial and R&D sites in Santa Clara County and the Bay Area.
Mitsie has nearly 35 years of experience leading innovative strategies and solutions for commercial property management companies. She has an unsurpassed ability to maximize property values for her clients by reducing expenses while securing high-quality vendor services and increasing rents through lease renewals.
Mitsie has been widely acknowledged for her contributions to the real estate industry and has received numerous industry accolades including being nominated as a Woman of Influence by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, and winner of the 2011 South County Environmental Excellence Award and a Bay Area Green Business, and a Certified Green Business. She was awarded the Principle of the Year 2014 from BOMA Silicon Valley. The Silicon Valley Business Journal noted, “her ability to manage the emotional side of real estate ownership is a hallmark of her guardianship philosophy”. During the COVID-19 shutdowns in 2020 and 2021, she and her team successfully negotiated with hundreds of tenants and clients to develop individualized payment plans with lease extensions to keep tenants operational and minimize lost income for clients. This resulted in only 3 tenant closures out of 478 tenants within the company’s portfolio.
Mitsie served on the CREW Silicon Valley (Commercial Real Estate Women) Board of Directors as President in 1995, 1996, and 2009; as Vice-Chair on the Board of the American Red Cross-Santa Clara Valley Chapter and Co-Director of the Annual Fundraiser in 2010; BOMA Silicon Valley Programs Chair; and Morgan Hill Freedom Fest. She holds an RPA (Real Property Administrator) designation from BOMI and well as a California Department of Real Estate Broker’s License. She has been a champion for the Association of Silicon Valley Brokers for over a decade fundraising for their selected charities.
